Abstract
The opto-electric coupling head comprises a standard transistor metal housing (12) closed by a base (11) made of an alloy of iron, nickel and cobalt with a coefficient of expansion similar to that of glass. An electroluminescent device such as a diode (13) sits on a metal heat sink or ceramic support (14) in the housing (12) on the base (11) and is energised by wires passing through the base (11). A cylindrical fibre carrier (16) projects through the top of the housing (12) and has a planar end face spaced on exact distance from the diode (13) by an annular metal spacer located between the end face and the base (11). The optical fibre (15) is secured in an axial bore in the carrier (16) facing the diode (13). In assembly the carrier (16) is held exactly in place, prior to being soldered to the housing, by a coaxial spring (19) abutting a flange at the end face of the carrier (16) and a bearing ring (20) abutting the inner top of the housing (12) coaxial with the carrier (16). The ring is subsequently soldered in place.
