Abstract
The system is used to prevent fissure formation resulting from internal growth stresses and shrinkage effects. It operates by stabilising the end faces of hard timber beams, esp. railway sleepers. One or more inward cuts (12) are made parallel to the shorter side of the rectangular beam (1), and near this side. These penetrate into the wood from the end face, in the grain direction. A metal profile ring (16) is driven into the centre zone bounded by the cuts from the end face. The ring may be rectangular, with cuts close together outside its shorter sides.
