Abstract

The transmission system imparts co-ordinated rotational and axial displacements to a machine tool spindle. A fixed pinion imparts rotation, being mounted co-axially on a splined spindle section, and being rotated by an offset motor pinion. A co-axial ring pinion imparts sliding and is mounted on the head of a hollow screw which engages a sleeve mounted nut. The screw bore accommodates the spindle, the screw itself penetrating the sleeve which slides in a housing. The sleeve mountings may use roller bearing assemblies running on axially parallel sleeve barrel flats, bearing pressure being varied by means of wedges or hydraulics.
