Abstract
Flywheels for use with a high peripheral velocity are reinforced by circular windings of high tensile filaments, specifically of 'Kevlar' (RTM) to obtain a high energy/wt. ratio and resist high peripheral stresses. For energy storage and release in static or mobile machinery. Use of 'Kevlar' filaments bonded by epoxy resin allows specific energy densities of up to 0.27 kWh/kg to be attained, compared with approx. 0.025 kWh/kg for inertial flywheels. Pref. the flywheel structure is thin and is loaded near the core with a cheap, dense, heavy material, e.g. lead, to raise the inertial energy storage capacity in parts of the wheel where the fibres are not fully stressed by the kinetic effects. Suggests use for flywheels with peripheral speeds of up to 1400 m/s and a capacity of up to 14 kWh at 33500 rpm and an output of up to 10 kWh when running on low friction bearings in an evacuated casing.
