Abstract

A method for inhibiting or promoting crystallisation in freshly injected thermoplastic material such as polyethylene terephthalate, comprises in the first instance applying a first pressure (P1) during the initial phase of cooling, and then at a predetermined temp. above the Tg, applying a second pressure (P2) much greater than the first until the material has cooled below the Tg and in the second instance cooling the injected material first at a very high pressure (P1) and then as cooling progresses at a series of decreasing pressures (P2) much smaller than the first. By manipulating the pressures as above, in one case the formation of spherulites is inhibited, whilst in the second the formation is promoted. In the first instant (P1) may be 100 psi and (P2) 20,000 psi., and the predetermined temperature is 200-220 degrees C. In the second instance the first pressure is 20,000 psi and the pressure is reduced by about 300 psi for each degree of cooling after the spherulite growth rate has reached its maximum.
