Abstract

The optical fibre connector is based on the use of industrial sapphires and specifically whose used as liquid or gas fuel nozzles. The sapphire element (31) is in the form of an annulus one side being plane and the other having a taper leading to the annulus centre. The internal diameter is chosen to match that of the fibre (21) without its protective sheath which is guided into the annulus via the taper and set so that its face is slightly recessed from the annulus plane surface. The fibre end face may be cut or broken without impairing transmission to the mating connector. The fibre is carried within the outer connector cylinder by a sleeve (26) and a guide (11) the mating end face (18) being plane with that (38) of the annulus.
