Abstract

It is sometimes necessary to remove a strip of material, supplied in roll form, from its roll and to deposit it upon a moving surface. This operation presents problems when the material is unable to withstand any force in tension, such as fibre cloths used as separators in batteries. The roll rests on a V-shaped cradle formed of two driven bands (2' and 2"). The drive for each band runs at the same speed, pref. ensured through mechanically coupled chain-drives, and the speed is measured by a detector (6). The material is thus fed to the moving surface (3), the free length trail (T) being kept to a minimum. A further speed detector (7) measures the speed of the surface. Two further detectors (4 and 5), for example actuated be the intersection of trail (T) with light beams to photocells, sense when the respective speeds of the driven bands and of the surface are mismatched. Electronic circuits then being the speeds back into synchronism.
