Abstract

1,008,579. Packaging. GEVAERT PHOTO-PRODUCTEN N.V. July 13, 1962 [July 14, 1961], No. 27096/62. Heading B8C. [Also in Division B6] A moving web 1 of paper or other material, e.g. synthetic plastic material or film, is folded longitudinally, the folding being started at a position 5 along the course of the moving web where the course doubles back on itself, the web being advanced from the position 5 in longitudinally folded condition with the external side of the fold facing the unfolded portion of the web moving up to the position 5. As shown in Fig. 4 the unfolded portion of the web is advanced by feed rollers 17, 18, 19 and the folded portion by feed rollers 20, 21, the latter portion passing between the ends of the rollers 18, 19. In practice the position 5 will not remain in the same place but will tend to move towards or away from the rollers 17-19. In order to obviate such movement the relative speeds of the feed rollers may be controlled by an optical or mechanical system which ensures that the position 5 remains stationary. In a modification, Fig. 5, the feed rollers are omitted and the web is folded by means of conical members 13, 14 which are driven. The conical members may instead be fixed and have a smooth friction-free surface. The conical members may be replaced by shaped plates, Fig. 6 (not shown). If a fold having a rectangular profile is required the conical members are spaced apart and the web 1 is guided between them by a member 23. A web of X-ray film 24 is introduced into a folded web 25 of packing paper, the fold being produced in accordance with the method set out above, and the combined webs are severed by a cutting device 28.
