Abstract
A flexible waveguide (3) for frequencies over 10 GHz, pref. 33 to 50 GHz and propagation in fundamental TE10 mode is made of plastics material such as PTFE impregnated with 50% to 90% by weigh of silver or silver alloy. The waveguide mixture of TEFLON and silver is introduced into a mould about a core then compressed under high pressure and temp. The flexibility decreases with increase in silver. A metallic layer is deposited on the interior of the guide (3) as follows: a) The interior is roughened to remove its polished surface; b) The guide is dipped in a softening bath and then metal specs deposited on its inner surface by soaking the guide in a solution of Palladium chloride; c) The guide is washed and a thin layer of copper deposited chemically; d) The guide is agains rinsed in a softening bath and a layer of copper electrolytically deposited in an acid bath with a copper wire anode placed coaxially within the guide. This lasts for 15 minutes and then a thin layer of gold is deposited to prevent oxidation of the copper.
