Abstract

For use on automobiles, the oleo-mechanical transmission unit conveys circular motion from an input to an output shaft for a continuous variation of gear ratios, and utilises an hydraulic motor mounted in co-axial series with an hydraulic pump in a common rotatable housing. Both the motor and pump are of the rotor and vane type, having constant and variable cubic capacities respectively, and utilising the ratio between effective cubic capacities to determine the sense of rotation together with the gear ratio. Also, the pump and motor are connected by a closed circuit hydraulic feed, and the housing rotates at input shaft speed whilst incorporating the axially parallel and segmental galleries forming the hydraulic circuit. Pump eccentricity may be varied by a double cam mounting, each cam being positioned by a jack-operated lever.
