Abstract

The system provides lower power consumption and greater compactness compared with existing radar systems by detecting ambient visible or infra-red radiation from the ground. Electronic images of zones of the ground in front of (SA) and to the rear of (SB) the aircraft are obtained by scanning arrays of charge coupled device photodetectors onto which objective lenses focus the light. The photodetectors are read in synchronisation and the video signals are digitally encoded and entered in memories prior to auto-correlation. Real time aircraft speed is obtained from geometric data (h, THETA) and the measured delay time given by the image comparator. Each photodetector cell supplies information to its own memory cell which permits scanning and speed measurement in both the x and y directions.
