Abstract
The canal may be used to feed an hydroelectric installation, with turbines driven by the flow in canals traversing an isthmus with tide differentials, having a tapered plan with the depth inversely proportioned to the width. Flows are, thus, augmented not only by increasing cross-sectional areas but by the application of the hydraulic gradient over relatively great depths. Several canals may be connected to form e.g. semi-circular loops with gyratory flow characteristics, and turbines may be sited in the shallow reaches to obviate stacking. Cyclonic effects may also be utilised by converting potential sea energy into rotational energy, and wave energy may be used to pump sea water into the system to obtain an acceleration effect.
