Abstract

The detection junction is for light passing through a fibre optic esp. multi-mode fibres. The detection area is defined by thinning the 50 micron core (4) and 30 micron thick sheath (2) over a 400 micron length (8, 10). The detector (18) itself is positioned on the parallel section of the fibre adjacent to the neck and is secured to the sheath surface by a transparent glue (22). The detector surface length is between 2 and 10 times the fibre diameter dependent on the insertion loss that can be tolerated. The detector can be used to regulate the light input to the fibre via a feedback loop.
