Abstract
Bleaching of Kraft paper pulp is effected by O2 treatment of the pulp fibres dispersed in an aq. alkaline medium contg. a complexing agent, comprising an alkaline metal, generally Na, salt of >=1 aminomethylene-phosphonic acid of formula (I) (where n = 2-6; and m = 0-5). Salt is present as >=0.01 (0.1-1) wt.% of the dry pulp; if the proportion of the salt is >=0.1 wt.%, the aq. medium also contains a Mg salt. Complexing agent prevents degradation of the cellulose during bleaching of the paper pulp, or improves the protective action of a Mg salt. The use of aminomethylenephosphonates alone gives a whiter pulp than that obtd. with the Mg salts.
