Abstract

A removable device to be fitted into containers for transporting and storing radioactive products, partic. irradiated fuel rods, with a view to making their temp. uniform, allows the containers to be partitioned as a function of their shape so that heat is transmitted from the centre to the wall with very small temp. gradients. It consists in its central part of a heat exchange structure, and of two end supporting shoes and a compression element. The compression element maintains the supporting shoes in permanent contact under press. with the inner walls of the container and acts as a press. limiter in case of expansion. The device allows the transmission of heat from the centre to the walls with a small gradient in containers made in a standard manner according to normally practised techniques and tolerances. In addn. it allows cells to be arranged in terms of the number, shape and dimensions of the radioactive fuels being transported. As it is removable, it facilitates decontamination of the interior of the container.
