Abstract
A floating hollow cylindrical vessel is used to collect and separate e.g. oil from polluted seas, operating predominately submerged with the axis of revolution vertical, and being open at both the top and bottom. Floatation is effected by an external girdle of inflated rubber or watertight air-filled caissons, and alternative geometric plan forms can be utilised, sepn. being effected naturally by utilising the differential densities of oil and sea water. An oil collection operation may utilise ancillary vessels to pump contaminated water into the tank, the oil automatically concentrating in the higher surface levels, and uncontaminated sea water being expelled by hydraulic pressure through the tank base. The undiluted oil may now be pumped from the tank into tankers etc.
