Abstract

High strength flexible graphite foil is made by heating graphite flake in the presence of B to 1700-3000 degrees C until the B permeates the crystal structure. The permeated flake is then treated with an intercalating agent, rapidly heated to 300-1100 degrees C, compressed to a preform and then compressed to a foil. The B treated graphite foil has a higher tensile strength e.g. foil with density of 1 g/cc. and B content 0.013 and 0.16% wt. had tensile strengths of 1800 and 2200 p.s.i. respectively.
