Abstract

An internal combustion engine has a compressor to provide air for the brakes. The compressor has a piston(2) reciprocating in a cylinder(3) with a cylinder head(4). A valve plate(5) is clamped between the cylinder and the head. The cylinder head has passages(8) for cooling water. Connections from these can pick up passages(9) for cooling water in the valve plate. The head passages contain a changeover valve(10). This enables the head to be used with a valve plate which has cooling passages as well as with a valve plate without such passages.
