Abstract

Prodn. of a coloured inscription on paper comprises applying a potential difference between a flat electrode carrying a moist sheet of paper impregnated with a pH-sensitive developer, (e.g. phenol-phthalein), and a pointed electrode applied to the other side of the paper to cause a displacement of charge. The polarity determines the colour of the inscription which is formed in the surface of the paper facing the pointed positioned and controlled during the inscription such that a current of >5 microamperes is passed for >0.1 microseconds. The developer can be chosen such that it gives one colour above one pH and another colour below another pH, so that two-colour images can be formed. Images can be formed at relatively low potential differences (e.g. 10-50 volts). Recording is very rapid. In a pref. embodiment, the pointed electrode consists of a number of pointed electrodes in the form of a matrix in contact with the paper, so that by selective application of a potential difference to a combination of the electrodes, various characters can be recorded.
