Abstract

The mandrel consists of an expandable cylinder fitted on a trolley with wheels so the mandrel can be driven through the bore of the pipe, esp. by a hydraulic motor fitted on the trolley. Inside cylinder is an open-ended cylinder contg. a piston actuated by a high pressure hydraulic cylinder. Cylinder has a peripheral wall which can expand outwards but not longitudinally; and this cylinder is filled with a lig. When piston is driven along cylinder, the liq. forces the peripheral wall of cylinder outwards to support the wall of a pipe being bent. Cylinder is pref. fitted in cylinder via a pivot mounting. The mandrel can be rapidly expanded and contracted, and thus results in low pipe bending costs.
