Abstract

The maritime platform is mounted on a stayed mast which oscillates under forces imposed by the sea, the foot of the mast having a demi-spherical form bearing in a socket of a similar form. The foot bearing transmit vertical loads to a sea-bed foundation whilst allowing the mast to pivot in any direction, and is now further developed to resist mast torsion. The anti torsion mechanism may utilise flexible chains which align with mast tangents in plan, and are anchored to the mast and the foundation respectively. An alternative design uses an elastomers layer between the ball and the socket, the ball being diametrically pinned in a ring which is in turn pinned to the socket on the perpendicular diameter.
