Abstract

Prepn. of a feed for dogs and cats comprises cutting or sawing up into pieces, fresh, green pig skins from which the lard has been removed. The skins can be frozen or unfrozen and where non-frozen material is used, this is cut into pieces using a mincer with suitable cutting edges and/or a large perforated plate. The prod. is defatted, roasted, opt. dried or stabilised, then packaged. The pieces are of various sizes with rectangular, round or coiled up shapes. They contain 70-75% crude protein (of which 70-98% is digestible), 18-25% fat, about 1% crude fibre, about 1% salt and 4-6% water. A feed can be made from an almost valueless material, and contains all the essential amino acids and is readily accepted by the animals. It is particularly useful as a slimming diet and for use in the training of guard dogs or working dogs. The pieces can also be poisoned for use as a bait for rats and mice.
