Abstract
Animal food is made by breding insects, esp. flies, and subsequently killing them by heating or cooling. The insects can be killed e.g. by heating to >60 degrees C or by cooling to 15 degrees C, esp. to -10 to +5 degrees C. Killing can be accomplished e.g. in a heated or cooled tunnel or in a liq. gas. The dead insects may be compressed into tablets or granules. opt. after comminution and/or mixing with other food components. Insects such as flies multiply rapidly and form a cheap replacement for expensive protein supplements such as fish meal used in cattle food. The prods. are useful for feeding chicks, poultry, birds, pigeons, fish, etc.
