Abstract
Steel products to be hot coated (e.g. by hot dip coating or enamelling) are heat treated in a controlled atmosphere under normal total pressure but in which a partial pressure of oxygen is maintained such that (a) iron is not oxidised or is only partially oxidised without formation of higher oxides and (b) elements such as C, Mn, P, Al and Si are completely oxidised within a thin surface layer without formation of a continuous surface oxide layer. The treatment can be applied to slabs and billets prior to rolling and to rolled products, esp. to prepare them for hot dip galvanising. The treatment neutralises the effect of alloying elements and impurities in the steel surface so that steels of different compsns. can be coated under indentical conditions. By preventing formation of a continuous oxide layer (esp. of scale contg. Fe2O3 and Fe3O4), removal of the treated surface layer during pickling is avoided.
