Abstract
Catalysts for steam dealkylation of petroleum fractions contg. mono- or polyalkyl aromatic hydrocarbons comprise 0.1-5 wt.% of >=1 Group (VIII) metal supported on an L zeolite which may be exchanged with alkali metal cations or with polyvalent Group Vb, VIb or VIIb metal cations. Pref. catalysts comprise 0.1-2 wt.% Rh and/or Ir on ML zeolite (where M is Li, Na, Cs, V, Cr or Mn). The Rh and/or Ir can be incorporated by impregnation or ion exchange. Ion exchange is pref. effected by drying the zeolite at 140 degrees C in an air stream, contacting with an HCl or acetic acid soln. of the relevant metal(s), drying in air at 140 degrees C, and calcining in 2 stages by heating to 200 degrees C in 30-200 min and then heating to 500 degrees C in 30 min, followed by cooling in a desiccator. Before use, the catalyst is reduced in an H2 stream at 400-500 degrees C and then steamed at 400-600 degrees C for 15-240 min. The catalysts have high activity, selectivity and stability.
