THE SPEED OF RECRISTALLIZATION OF THE PLATE IN A CARBON-SUPPORTED PLATINUM CATALYST IS REDUCED BY DEPOSITING POROUS CARBON ON AND AROUND THE SUPPORTED PLATINUM CRYSTALLITES. THE CATALYST MAY BE SUBJECT TO SUBSEQUENT HEATING UNDER AN INERT ATMOSPHERE OR VACUUM AT A HIGH TEMPERATURE. A CATALYST CONSISTING OF PLATINUM CRYSTALLITES ON A CARBON SUPPORT CAN THUS BE OBTAINED, THIS CATALYST HAVING A BETTER EFFICIENCY. THE CATALYST OF THE INVENTION IS USED IN FUEL CELLS.
