Abstract

The process uses a preliminary fermentation zone and then an activated sludge treatment zone. The residence time in the preliminary zone is controlled according to the pollutant charge of the water so that the multiplication of bacteria carries onto a level corresp. to the exponential phase. The process is carried out in an installation comprising 2 basins. The first fermentation basin has means to vary the volume of water it contains according to the pollution level. The first basin is linked to the second activated sludge basin by a conduit opt. provided with an adjustable valve, and opt. by a weir. The process avoids the risk of destruction of the activated sludge, partic. protozoa, by, for example, effluent from distilleries and paper-making. It enables great adaptability and economy in oxygen consumption.
