Abstract
Layer of bitumen enclosing pipes for circulating a heat transfer fluid is used as the heat absorbant medium for a solar energy trap. Bitumen combines low cost with a high thermal capacity, flexibility, good chemical and weather resistance, low density and ease of fabrication of sealed traps by casting. Pref. the bitumen has a softening temp. of 37-140 degrees C, a needle penetration value of 200-10, typically is used as a layer of thickness is approx. 50 mm in the base of a channel or tray with a transparent cover.
