Abstract
The temp. (Ta) of a molten bath of steel during oxygen refining is predicted by measuring the value dP/dt is measured to determine the time (t) at which dP/dt is zero, where P is the bath wt. The bath temp. (T) is measured at time (t), and from this time, the decarburisation speed (dC/dt), and the speed (dO1/dt) at which O2 enters the slag, are measured and used in the equation: In the equation, Q is the quantity of heat in the bath; HC is the heat of combustion of carbon; F is the mole wt. factor for converting %O2 into the Fe lost by combustion; HFe is the heat of combustion of iron; QGU is the quantity of heat in the gases used; d(GI)/dt is the speed of prodn. of the gases used; d(PT)/dt is the speed of the unaccountable thermal losses. The result is the calculation of Ta at t+dt. Used specifically in steel making, the process can also be applied to the refining of nonferrous metals, e.g. Cu or Ni.
