Abstract

The spring-actuated fluid pressure-releasable brake for rail vehicles has a piston connected to an actuating head through a non-self locking screw and nut. Motion of the piston is transmitted to the head only if relative rotation between the screw and the nut is prevented by a ratchet. The ratchet includes a pawl which is disengageable from the associated ratchet wheel either manually by a plunger or by fluid pressure acting on a control piston. The plunger and the control piston are situated on a common axis at diametrally opposite sides of the ratchet wheel.
