Abstract

Insulating panels comprise a metal plate shell with upper, lower, side and end walls, a layer of an alkali metal silicate which covers virtually the whole interior surface of the shell, and a cast core of polymer foam resin which fills the interior of the shell. Pref. the intumescent layer in the panel is of sodium silicate and the foam core is of polyurethane. In a pref. method of construction, the upper edge of the panel is provided with a series of ventilation holes and the alkali metal silicate is applied to the shell surface in the form of preformed sheets which are opt. reinforced with fire resistant fibres. The upper silicate layer is provided with holes which correspond with the ventilation holes in the top edge of the shell. The panels are esp. useful as doors and insulating panels for refrigerated rooms. Under fire conditions the alkali silicate layer decomposes to form a heat stable foam material and prevents loss of adhesion between the foam core and the panel surface.
