Abstract

The transformer with tappings is fitted with a stepping switch and has voltage dependent resistors. These are connected in parallel with the winding sections and also with the stepping switch in order to protect them from switching surges. The voltage dependent resistors are connected in series with ohmic resistors which will limit the current. The voltage dependent resistors are made from zinc oxide. Several of the voltage dependent resistors are grouped together with corresponding ohmic resistors. The windings subjected to higher surge voltage stresses will be protected with several groups in series.
