Abstract

image intensifier consists of an input screen for converting a radiation image into an electron charge image; an electro-optical system for accelerating and focussing the electron charge image; and an output screen on which a visible image is produced by the electron charge image. The input and/or output screen consists of a support with an electrochemically applied network with cracks extending from the upper regions of the network to the surface of the phosphor layer, so that they form a large no. of phosphor blocks. There is also a photo-cathode applied to the phosphor layer directly or over a barrier layer. In an example, Al foil was anodised and the small pores were sealed by adding water of crystallisation and heating above 250 degrees C so that an irregular mosaic formed. Electroplating with Ni took place preferentially in the gaps in the mosaic, then a CsI phosphor coating was applied, which formed numerous blocks with a dia. of 50-100 mu. The foil was used as input screen.
