Abstract

Rolling bearings are usually installed in housings (1) with an abutment (10) at the end of the bore. The formation of this abutment which increases the cost of machining can be eliminated by using a bearing (2) with an external groove (2a). A split spring ring (7) is fitted into the groove (2a) and the bearing (2) is then installed in a through bore (4) in the housing. The spring ring (7) locates the bearing (2) by abutting against the end face (6) of the recess (5). A retaining plate (8) which is secured by screws (9) holds the bearing (2) in place. The retaining plate (8) has sufficient elasticity to take up relatively large machining tolerances.
