Abstract

Plant for the heat treatment of steel strip, which is driven from a feeder or uncoiler through an inductor supplied by a high-frequency (h.f.) generator to heat the strip above the Curie point. The inductor is directly followed by a quenching spray to obtain max. strip hardness. The spray is followed by a second inductor fed by an h.f. generator for tempering the strip below the Curie point; and the strip is then cooled in air, and fed to a coiling spool. After cooling to 200 degrees C subsequent to the tempering operation, a second spray may be used to cool the strip to ambient temp. The plant is esp. used for heat treating saw blade strip, in which case the second spray is followed by a third inductor and a spray for hardening the saw teeth. Used e.g. for heat treating saw blade strip at 8 metres/minute, using h.f. generators of 10-30 kW output.
