Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce a strengthened steel wire rod for drawing which is fined in pearlite block size by subjecting a high carbon steel wire having a specific compsn. to a combination of warm working and heat treatment under specific conditions then to patenting in a lead bath. CONSTITUTION:The steel wire contg., by weight %, 0.7-0.9% C, 0.001-0.005% B, and 0.05-0.2% Nb is quickly cooled down to a 550-650 deg.C range at >=200 deg.C/sec cooling rate from the temp. of an austenite region to sufficiently generate the supercooled austenite. The wire rod stock is subjected to >=20% working in this temp. region. The wire rod stock is then reheated to the austenite temp. region and is subjected to the patenting in the lead bath. The pearlite block size is thereby fined and the high carbon steel wire rod for drawing of about 400kgf/mm<2> class is obtd.
