Abstract

The oil retaining ring is for the piston of an IC engine has an axially and redially outwardly sprung support ring (17) which is of U-section and exerts radial and axial force on a scraper ring (18) placed between the support ring and the side of the piston ring groove (2) nearest the combustion chamber. Adjacent the other side of the groove the support ring has support surfaces (22) engaging the cylinder wall (9). The support surfaces are spaced apart (20) circumferentially by distances greater than the peripheral extent of the surfaces themselves. The surfaces may be integral with the first ring or may be formed by a third ring.
