Abstract

Prefoaming of expandable plastics, e.g. polystyrene, in bead form by pre-heating and then subjecting them to an ascending ring-shaped stream of hot gas, the temp. and flow rate of which is controlled to lift and move the beads, and heat them to their softening temp. The pre-expanded beads are used directly for moulding, without intermediate storage for drying or re-absorption of gas . Pre-expanded beads of good quality, with wt. of 8-25 kg/m2 and ready for immediate use, are obtd. by a simple continuous process. MAterial loss by handling is reduced, and the beads are smoother and stronger than those of equal density expanded in steam.
