Abstract

1421529 Polymerization process; expanded polymer beads ROTHMANS INTERNATIONAL Ltd 29 Dec 1972 [29 Sept 1971] 45411/71 Headings C3C and C3P Bead polymers containing particulate additive are produced by a suspension polymerization process comprising heating the additive together with a polymerization initiator in the suspension medium for sufficient time to wet the additive, then adding the monomer and effecting suspension polymerization. An expansion agent may be during the polymerization or to the polymer beads. Examples describe the production of polystyrene or copolystyrene/ vinylpyrrolidone beads containing carbon black which on being soaked in n-pentane can then be expanded by dielectric heating. Other blowing agents are referred to. The expansion may be effected in two steps, firstly with steam or other heat source and then by dielectric heating.
