Abstract

An elastomeric polydiene composition is produced by (1) forming a hydrocarbon solution comprising a polydiene elastomer and 5 to 25% by weight based on the polydiene, of diene monomer in the presence of 100 to 2500 p.p.m. based on the monomer of a lithium alkyl catalyst. Monomers specified are butadiene and isoprene. In the examples isoprene dissolved in mixed isoamylenes is first polymerized using a low concentration of butyl lithium as catalyst, the polymerization being terminated with methanol and reinitiated three times, to produce a high molecular weight polymer and then the polymerization is completed with the same catalyst present but in a much higher concentration to produce a low molecular weight component. The resultant composition is coagulated with steam and hot water and dried. Block polymers may be formed by polymerizing a vinyl compound, e.g. styrene, with either the high molecular weight polymer before the final polymerization or with the final composition.
