Abstract

A vertical cylindrical mixing vessel is claimed of the type contg. heat transfer elements and agitator(s)., which is divided into at least two superimposed compartments by horizontal partitions and has inlet and outlet connections at opposite ends, i.e. top and bottom. There is no passage through any partition so that the product has to be transferred between compartments via pipework external of the vessel shell. For each compartment, the inlet and outlet pipework connections are pref. at different levels and disposed diagonally to each other. Each transfer pipework pref. has a branch inlet partic. for dilution liq. when the prod. is massecuite. The vessel pref. contains an axial rotary shaft fitted with agitator frames which pass between heat transfer elements. Used for mixing, heating, cooling a liq. prod. partic. massecuite which is cooled for crystal growth and heated to a lower viscosity prior to centrifuging, botn in the mfr. of sugar. By adding dilution liq. via the external pipework the liq. is homogeneously dispersed into the massecuite. Superimposed sections can be devoted to heating, holding a temp. or cooling, all in a single vessel.
