Abstract

854,371. Mixing appliances. COOMBES, S. N. Feb. 24, 1959, No. 6298/59. Class 86 [Also in Group XIII] A rotary heat exchanger mounted in. a liquid container 1 to heat or cool the liquid therein comprises concentric tubular elements 2, 3 and a plurality of branch tubes projecting radially from the tubular elements, said branch tubes interconnecting the space within the inner element and the annular space between said elements whreby a heating or cooling fluid such as water may be passed through the branch tubes by way of said concentric tube elements. The apparatus may be used to heat or cool a liquid mass which is then discharged from the container. Alternatively. a liquid may be heated or cooled in moving continuously through the container' The branch tubes may each comprise con centric-tubes 10, 12 connected to the elements 2, 3 in the manner shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or they may comprise single tubes 42 shaped and connected to the tubes 2, 3 in the manner shown in Fig. 8. The tube assembly may be such that all the branch tubes are connected in parallel for the flow of heating or cooling fluid therethrough. Alternatively the connection with the tubes 2, 3 may be such that the heating or cooling fluid flows through series connected groups of parallel-connected branch tubes. Disc baffles, to assist heat exchange may extend radially from the element 3 into the fluid being heated or cooled and may be gapped with the gaps in adjacent baffles relatively staggered. When, as in a further form described, the axis of rotation of the heat exchanger is vertical and the fluid to be heated or cooled is a substance such as massecuite, scrapers may be provided for preventing deposits of sugar crystals on the baffles or on the bottom of the container. Means are provided for permitting the branch tubes to be drained when necessary and also for permitting the escape of air displaced from the upper ends of the branch tubes when the heat exchanger is initially primed with heating or cooling fluid.
