Abstract

The tilting device enables the rotational axis of a milling cutter to be moved slightly out of vertical with respect to the direction of cut. The shaft of the tool (1) rotates within a sleeve (4) which is fixed at the tool end by screws (8) passing through a flange (6) and locating tapped holes (9) in a centring collar (5). At the other end the sleeve is held by a number of fluid filled pressure pads (10a, 10c) distributed radially. The inclination of the sleeve is controlled by the independent setting of the pressure in each pad. This is achieved by adjusting restrictions set in the supply pipes between the pumps and the pads.
