Abstract

Process of parent patent is for removing S, esp. SO2, from a gas by contacting with an absorbant soln. contg. 25-33 wt.% of a halide of a metal from Groups II, III, and VIII and 0.3-0.8% of a hydroxide of the metal. In the addn. the compsn. range of the halide is increased to 7.5-36 wt.% and the lower compsn. of the hydroxide is decreased to 0.03% without affecting the efficiency. The soln. may be clear or limpid rather than a paste. The CO2 absorption capacity of the soln. can be reduced with CaCl2 and the desulphurisation efficiency increased. Solids can be easily separated from the soln. Compared with the limestone-gypsum process a higher rate of SO2 removal is possible for the same pH. NO2 can also be removed.
