Abstract

Sulphur dioxide and/or hydrogen sulphide are removed from industrial gases by (a) absorbing the sulphur dioxide in an aqs. buffer soln. (b) converting the absorption agent with hydrogen sulphide into elementary sulphur and a regenerated absorption soln., this regeneration being continued until the absorption soln. has a pH value of 6.5, (c) separating the elementary sulphur at a temp. above 120 esp. 135 degrees C. and (d) recycling the regenerated absorption soln. Process requires the recirculation of only small amounts of liquid. Regeneration gives a pure absorption soln. Destruction of hydrogen sulphide is practically complete. The sulphur is obtained in an easily separated liquid form.
