Abstract

The fuel injector comprises a main housing (10) with an axial bore at one end, of which there is a reduced cross-section outlet. Adjacent to this end there is a valve seat (18) with a valve needle (20). A fuel inlet (12) is provided to admit pressurised fuel to a point near the seat, the needle being lifted by fuel pressure against a spring (27). The needle defines a fuel chamber (24) with a variable volume which communicates with a fuel chamber (19) downstream of the seat, from which chamber the fuel outlet orifices (17) extend. The volume of the chamber (24) is reduced as the valve needle is lifted off its seat.
