Abstract

The telephone cable is made up of a twisted pair of wires, one of which has a longitudinal reference rib on it whilst the other is completely circular. The insulation of each conductor of the pair is formed by a layer of polyolefin which gives the transmission characteristics of the cable. A second thin layer of semiconducting material forms an external skin. The longitudinal reference rib is formed in this second layer. Both the layers can be extruded simultaneously or in two stages. The cable arrangement permits maintenance of stable capacitance and low out-of-balance capacity with respect to earth. It has propagation, insulation and dielectrical characteristics identical to those of classical telephone cables whatever the external surrounding medium is.
