Abstract

Electrically conducting Al (alloy) rod is made by continuous casting and rolling in a mill using >=2 gps. (1,2) of closely spaced pairs of rolls aligned in a straight row. The two gps. (1,2) are spaced apart so separate control of the rolling temps. can be applied, and the rod hot rolled in gp. (1), then cold rolled in gp. (2). A coolant with lower heat transfer (H-T) is pref. used during hot rolling (1), and another coolant with higher H-T used during cold rolling (2). Hot rolling (1) is pref. at 500-300 degrees C, esp. 500-400 degrees C with max. drop in rod temp. of 60 degrees C, whereas the rod temp. pref. drops by >=200 degrees C, during cold rolling. Pref the plant includes three or four gps. of rolls sepd. by heating or cooling devices for precise control of rod temp. during rolling. Cold rolled rod can be made at a faster prodn. rate than by drawing or extrusion, and with an excellent combination of fatigue strength and electrical conductivity.
