Abstract
Corrosion in heat transfer systems which use liquid alkali metals as the heat transport medium, is combated by adding metallic Al to the alkali metal in an amount dependent on the quantity of corrosion-inducing impurities (e.g. oxides, hydroxides and/or oxygen) present. The method avoids the costly ultra purification of the alkali metal and overcomes the problem of chemical transport which arises when using other additives (of, e.g. US 3726642). The method also gives longer-lasting protection.
