Abstract

The process is used for the absorption of the difference between the constant energy produced by the power of a group of electric current generators powering an isolated network, and the variable energy required by the network at each instant. This is in order to maintain the frequency of the network at its nominal value. The energy is dissipated by the application of a brake controlled by a regulator responsive to the frequency of the network. The brake may be fitted directly on to the shaft of the alternator, or may be fitted to an electric motor powered by the network. The brake may be mechanical or hydraulic.
